CHIEF OF POLICE – PROVINCETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS

The Town of Provincetown seeks qualified candidates for the position of Police Chief. Provincetown is a diverse community with a population of approximately 3,300 in the off-season and 30,000 during the summer. The Police Chief is appointed by the Town Manager and supervises a full time staff of 17 sworn officers, plus additional police dispatchers and civilian support staff. There are approximately 10 – 15 seasonal officers who are hired to supplement the staff during the summer months. Minimum requirements include 10 years full time police experience, including 5 years of supervisory experience with the rank of Sergeant, Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field, Master’s degree preferred. Base salary of $90,000 to $100,000 plus educational incentive and competitive fringe benefits. Residency is required. DEPARTMENT OF POLICE SERVICES

POLICE CHIEF


The City of New Haven is currently seeking a proven professional for the position of Police Chief. 

The New Haven Department of Police Services has 508 employees, (406 sworn) and a budget of almost $37 million, with two police classes totaling an additional 86 officers planned in the coming year. The Chief is appointed by the Mayor with daily responsibility to the Chief Administrative Officer and an appointed Board of Police Commissioners. The successful candidate must possess strong leadership, communication, organizational and management skills, as well as proven integrity in working with members of both the community and police department.  Experience in implementing organizational change and a strong commitment to innovation and community policing is required. 

The City of New Haven is the second-largest city in Connecticut and has a population of more than 125,000 in an area of less than 20 square miles.  Rich in history, New Haven is a vibrant center for businesses, industries, boutiques, restaurants, museums, theatres, and residences, all within walking distance. The city’s downtown centers on a large public green, dating from 1680. New Haven is also home to six universities and colleges, including world-renowned Yale University.  The Department of Police Services enjoys a close working relationship with Yale University on innovative programs. 

New Haven is a harbor city, located on the southern-central coast of Connecticut. Located at the juncture of I-91 and I-95, New Haven has direct access to most major cities along the eastern seaboard. Downtown New Haven is four miles from Tweed Regional Airport and is within easy access to Bradley International Airport in Hartford, JFK, La Guardia, Newark, and Providence airports.

The City of New Haven has a strong mayor/alderman form of government.  The Board of Aldermen is comprised of 30 representatives of the City’s wards.  The current Mayor is serving his eighth term in office.

A four-year college degree in criminal justice, police science, public administration or a related field and a minimum of five years of command level experience in a comparable sized police agency is required.  Labor management experience and attendance at senior management programs like the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP), FBI National Academy and Southern Policing Institute is preferred.  One of two assistant chief positions is currently vacant, with a proposal to add two additional assistant chiefs pending before the Board of Aldermen based on an organizational review by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).  All three expected vacancies will be filled after a chief is hired.

PERF is assisting the city in the selection process.  The position is open until filled. 

Salary Range:  Highly competitive; based on qualifications and experience.
