Cheshire Police Department Seeks Chief of Police
The Town of Cheshire is seeking an experienced, visionary, and community-oriented law enforcement professional to serve as Chief of Police. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, integrity, and a commitment to transparency, accountability, and community engagement. This is a critical executive role responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all operations of the Cheshire Police Department, including the Town’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP/dispatch center).

Key Responsibilities
- Assigns all officers and employees of the department to their respective posts,
shifts, details and duties. - Is responsible for the care and custody of all property used by the department.
- Coordinates and administers daily police activities through subordinates.
- Supervises and coordinates activities of department staff. Recommends personnel actions such as promotions, transfers and disciplinary actions. Conducts performance evaluations. Subject to the approval of the Town Manager and in accordance with the provision of the Town’s Classified Service Plan, may appoint and remove all other officers and employees of the Police Department.
- Appoints and may remove for cause, subject to the approval of the Town Manager, the Municipal Animal Control Officer and assistants, and supervises the activities of that function.
- Coordinates police activities with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Oversees the reporting of statistical information to state and federal law enforcement agencies. Oversees establishment and maintenance of police records system.
- Executes policy of traffic authority by administering traffic control devices and regulations, including placement of traffic signals, traffic signs and so forth. Works closely with the State Department of Transportation in traffic control on state highways.
- Makes rules and regulations concerning the operation of the department and the conduct of all officers and employees thereof.
- Establishes department goals.
- Prepares and delivers lectures in crime prevention activities to various groups.
- Directs all training and recruiting activities.
- Prepares proposed budgets and approves department expenditures.
- Prepares reports pertaining to department operations.
- Participates in the negotiation of union contracts.
- Makes routine inspections and maintains departmental discipline.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including in a supervisory or command position.
- Certified or certifiable as a law enforcement officer in the State of Connecticut.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations and stakeholders.
